Faris Khan (i16-0414) It is a great honor for me to be a part of the high achievers in FAST-NUCES Islamabad batch 2016 of Electrical Engineering. I was able secure a gold medal in the very first semester of electrical engineering. It was what one might say a great moment of my life. One might think it required countless hours of studying, focus, determination and keeping the goal in your mind constantly. That might be true for most people generally, but this was not true in my case. After joining the university it took me some time to adjust, I made friends and I enjoyed my first semester. I had never planned on getting a gold medal that was just simply not my goal. In fact I didn’t realize I secured a gold medal till my friends told me. My goal was to learn, new concepts, new information that would be of use to me when I left this institution four years down the line, After all what is a medal, what does it signify? That one achieved the highest grades in all the courses? That can be done by many methods many shortcuts, but it does not mean that one has the best knowledge, concepts or best skills to be applied in the real world, in the end the ability to apply knowledge in the real world is what matters most. I didn’t go home and studying extra hard or spend sleepless nights going over the course material rather the only thing I did was pay attention in class, that’s it. All I did for the most part was give my entire focus during the lectures, I tried to understand the concepts in the class. I didn’t study much when I went home as I had other commitments. When the time came for quizzes or midterms I would just revise what was already clear in my head from sitting attentively in the class. Midterms and finals went by easily. I ended up achieving something that I had never planned for, rather it was a result of consistency, attentiveness and keeping the real goal clear in my head… learning. I would like to express my gratitude to the university and its faculty members, FAST has groomed and polished me, it has made me reassess my goals and vision. I now know the most important goal is lifelong learning.
