I was part of the first HR major’s batch of BBA at IBA. Against advice from friends, family and teachers I had chosen HR as my majors. Still I went ahead with my choosing HR as my majors because, while in school, our Pakistan Studies book had a chapter on what other countries had done to become so prosperous and successful. In one of those chapters there was an example of how Japan had progressed by treating their citizens as a human resource meaning that they saw their people as a source of prosperity if they were invested on, this idea really fascinated me and stayed with me and in BBA when I started studying management and HR, I understood how the employees of a company can be a source of an organization’s competitive advantage, an advantage that cannot be replicated and is unique to the organization, that spending on employee’s development is an investment and not an expense, that motivated and satisfied employees are the difference between the average and the great companies. I was lucky enough to have really good teachers for my HR courses and my internship experience helped me gain a better understanding of HR and appreciate its importance for an organization. After my BBA, I started working at IBA, in the HR department, I worked on the development and successful implementation of the Performance Management System for the staff and executive cadre of employees, on reward and recognition policy and selection & recruitment. This was a really good, value adding experience which gave me great exposure as to how theory actually meets practice and how important it is to have a sound theoretical base to build your practical experience on. After completing my 2 years of work experience, I decided to join the MBA program. I was skeptical at first whether I should do my MBA or not, but all my doubts were removed when the MBA started, one thing that I had learnt while at job was that HR is a support function that has to have an understanding of how other departments function and how the HR functions should support and work in synchronization with the other department to help the organization achieve its overall strategic goals, that HR cannot function in isolation or silos, that it has to understand the problems, work around them and provide solutions to the other departments in its capacity. This was my approach when I started my MBA, to take an interest in all major functions so that I gain an understanding of these functions so that as an HR professional I am able to better respond to the problems and issues of other department and help the HR function, work in alignment with the other functions and with the overarching strategic goals. Given my work experience and my MBA I would like to be a better contributor not only towards the HR field but also for the organization I work for, to give it my best effort and become a key contributor to the organization.
